Dr. Amanda Quintero, Associate Vice Provost for Student Success and Community Engagement, joined California State University Channel Islands (CSUCI) in 2004. During her tenure at CSUCI, Dr. Quintero led the start-up and administration of the Research and Sponsored Programs office, Center for Community Engagement, and spearheaded efforts to help CSUCI achieve HSI status in 2010. A powerful advocate of educational opportunity for historically undeserved students, she has raised $26 million in external funding to lead institutional change initiatives that build capacity for increasing student success outcomes, promoting educational equity, and facilitating access to educational opportunity. During her 15-year career at CSUCI, Dr. Quintero has been the recipient of the Outstanding Administrator Ally Award (2018), El Concilio Latino Leadership Award (2013), CI Multicultural Programs Women’s Leadership Award (2012, 2016) and the Pacific Coast Business Times 40 under 40 Award (2005). Dr. Quintero also served as the past President for the Alliance of HSI Educators, a national organization that supports the work of the nation’s more than 300 HSIs.

Prior to accepting her current position at CI, Dr. Quintero worked with the California State University Chancellor's Office of Community Service Learning as the Coordinator of AmeriCorps Programs. Preceding her tenure with the CSU system, Dr. Quintero served as a Governor’s Executive Fellow and Development Assistant in the Governor's Office on Service and Volunteerism (GOSERV), now known as the CaliforniaVolunteers. With 17-years of experience working in higher education and the public service sector, Dr. Quintero has developed, administered, and evaluated programs campuswide, CSU systemwide, and statewide.

A first-generation college graduate, she holds a B.A. in Global Studies from CSU Monterey Bay, M.A. in Public Policy & Administration from CSU Long Beach, Ph.D. in Education with an emphasis in Policy, Evaluation, and Reform from Claremont Graduate University, and is an alumna of the Harvard Institute for Management and Leadership in Education.

His hands-on approach to communities broadly defined, is paramount and largely significant to his research and social agenda. As such, he has taught at the University of Utah in the Department of Education, Culture & Society & The Ethnic Studies Program.

As a professor, his academic range includes sociology of education, educational policy, hip-hop and social justice education, leadership development and Ethnic studies. His research is committed to liberatory educational practices with a sound pedagogical approach. In other words, Dr. Land insists that race and racism, coupled with other historical, oppressive realities are yet continued battles in the 21st century and are largely important to the new millennium scholar.

He has taken his work and gifts seriously. His community involvement is untiring and necessary to his philosophy and work as a scholar, researcher and administrator. He maintains and believes that God has assigned him to this duty and he humbly works as a servant for God, his students, community, and the many he has mentored throughout the years on a national level. His ultimate global impact will resituate the perception of inclusivity and equity in education and society at large.

He has presented on various aspects of Santa Fe’s student success programming for the American Associate of Community Colleges, the National Institute for Staff and Organizational Development (NISOD), and the annual Innovations conference of the League for Innovation in the Community College. He was a member of the inaugural class of Presidential Fellows selected by the Aspen Institute, and under his academic leadership, Santa Fe College won the 2015 Aspen Prize for Community College Excellence, recognizing superior performance in student learning, student outcomes, and equity.

Dr. Brown commonly shares that her, “soul is on fire to make a significant difference in the lives of others.” And this passion fuels her excitement about the opportunity to help students access educational opportunities, overcome barriers to success, engage in developmental activities, complete academic goals, and ultimately enter into preferred career choices.

 

Naima completed a bachelor’s degree in sociology from Florida A&M University in 1995 and then went on to earn her masters and doctoral degrees in sociology from the University of Florida in 1997 and 2002 respectively. She specialized in Marriage & Family and Medical Sociology.

 

Dr. Brown was hired as a professor of sociology at Santa Fe College in 2000. As a faculty member, she was instrumental in internationalizing the marriage & family curriculum. With the support of the College, she traveled to Africa, Europe, South America, Asia, & the Middle East to learn and teach about cultural differences. She also led several study abroad tours and hosted international visitors on campus.

 

She currently serves on the Executive Board for the Education Foundation of Alachua County, is the Region III Representative on the Council for Student Affairs and also serves as an Advisory Board member for the Florida HIPPY program. In her down time, Dr. Brown enjoys playing Scrabble, reading international novels, supporting community theater, and traveling.

Under his leadership, the university has made remarkable gains in undergraduate student success, raising the six-year graduation rate from 51% to 68% while also eliminating the achievement gap by race, ethnicity, and socio-economic status. As the leader of a newly consolidated unit, he is forging a team that touches on all aspects of the student experience, including Enrollment Planning and Management, Undergraduate Studies, Dean of Students, Housing and Residential Education, Health and Wellness, and Career Services.

Dr. Dosal is also a Professor of Latin American History at the University of South Florida, specializing in the modern history of Cuba and the Caribbean region. He is the author of four books, including Comandante Che, a study of the military career of the legendary Latin American revolutionary Ernesto Che Guevara, and Doing Business with the Dictators, a history of the infamous United Fruit Company in Guatemala in the early 20th century.

Born and raised in Tampa, he is a fourth-generation descendant of Cuban immigrants who settled in Ybor City in 1889. He earned his B.A. in International Politics at St. Andrews College in Laurinburg, North Carolina. He received his M.A. in Latin American Studies and Ph.D. in History at Tulane University in New Orleans. Prior to joining the faculty at the University of South Florida, he taught for nine years at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst.
